Membership Pathways
Alpha Kappa Alpha provides a dynamic environment through which members are encouraged to grow – both personally and professionally, while collectively fulfilling the Sorority’s enduring purpose of Service to All Mankind.
Prospective members must meet high ethical standards and complete the official Membership Intake Process (MIP); any requests to engage in demeaning or unauthorized activities violate Sorority policy and will not be tolerated.

Membership will not be extended to an individual who knowingly participates in activities outside of the official Membership Intake Process; an individual who knowingly participates in activities which are demeaning, degrading or demoralizing; or an individual who knowingly submits falsified documents or credentials.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® does not discriminate in its membership selection practices on the basis of race, color, age, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, creed, marital status or disability. Nor will Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® tolerate such discrimination by its chapters or its members.
Federal law recognizes the right of college social fraternities and sororities to maintain single sex membership policies. Consistent with that right, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is a women’s organization and membership is open to women.
On a College Campus
If you are matriculating as full-time students at an accredited four-year college or university, you may be considered for membership through an undergraduate chapter. Information regarding undergraduate membership opportunities is shared through official, authorized communications, including approved printed materials posted on campus and notices coordinated through the institution’s Office of Greek Life or equivalent administrative office.
Prospective students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Risk Management policies of both their institution and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Adherence to these policies is essential and helps ensure a safe, respectful, and values-centered membership experience.
Graduate Chapter
If you have earned a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree from an accredited four-year college or university, you may be considered for membership through a graduate chapter.
Membership consideration at the graduate level occurs through an official, approved Membership Intake Process. An authorized written letter of invitation may be extended by an active graduate chapter to individuals who have been selected in accordance with Sorority policies and procedures.
Prospective members are encouraged to review the Anti-Hazing policies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, which reflect the Sorority’s unwavering commitment to safety, dignity, and respect throughout the membership experience.
Application Requirements and Process
Joining AKA has different paths depending on where you are in life: undergraduate and graduate students follow differing structured intake processes and legacy applicants may have tailored considerations based on family affiliation while still meeting Sorority standards.
Membership Intake Process
All existing and prospective members have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. These rights are enforced by punishing violations of the Sorority’s policies and procedures. A cornerstone of the Sorority’s Risk Management policy is the prohibition of hazing.
Hazing has been prohibited in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority since the organization was founded in 1908. In 1999, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority reaffirmed its total opposition to hazing with the publication of a tougher anti-hazing policy and the implementation of new procedures to identify, investigate and punish incidents.
